Multipaneluk is the largest manufacturer of aluminium composite panels in the UK, situated just outside Dover in Kent.
Several years ago, we were approached by a consultant who requested the installation of the GridVis® power monitoring system in the newly installed switchboards within the manufacturing workshop. This project commenced with an initial site survey, followed by consultations with the switchboard manufacturer to determine the appropriate meters to be fitted. The site comprised three 11kV MV Substations — Line one, Line two, and the Recycle plant — and one Intake Substation.
Selecting components
It was decided to install one UMG 512 power analyzer in each of the three substations and two in the Intake Substation, complemented by 29 UMG96RM meters across the four Substations. Additionally, we utilized the ProData2 data logger modules to read information from the Sepams over Modbus. This enabled us to display the state of the main incomers and gas pressure in the RMUs (ring main units).
A head-end on a dedicated PC
The GridVis® head-end was set up on a dedicated PC that would be stationed in the main control office. We developed some initial screens to gather client feedback and gain approval before undertaking the main graphical design, which encompassed a total of 23 screens created at our office.
Upon completion of the head-end, the next phase involved visiting the site to wire in the communication cables and terminate them at the meters and data loggers. Subsequently, the PC was installed in the control office.
Testing the communications setup
We then proceeded to check the communication with each meter and data logger, ensuring that the graphic screens were populated with the meters and that all MCCBs were assigned the correct data from the data loggers.
Once satisfied with the communication setup, we manually operated each breaker in sequence and verified that the correct information was displayed.
Client review and sign off
Following this, the client was invited to review the complete system and perform a few checks themselves. The job was then signed off, and a maintenance contract was offered to the client.
Real-time monitoring and analysis of power usage
The successful implementation of the GridVis® power monitoring system resulted in significant benefits for Multipanel UK. The system provided real-time monitoring and analysis of power usage, enabling the company to optimize its energy consumption and reduce costs.
Improve decision-making and efficiency
The detailed graphical screens offered a clear and comprehensive view of the power distribution network, facilitating better decision-making and enhancing operational efficiency. Moreover, the installation of the data loggers allowed for accurate tracking of power flows and quick identification of any anomalies or issues, ensuring swift resolution and minimal downtime.
High quality, customised solutions
Overall, the project demonstrated our commitment to delivering high-quality, customized solutions that meet the unique needs of our clients. By leveraging advanced technologies and expertise, we were able to enhance the operational capabilities of Multipanel UK and support their ongoing efforts towards sustainability and efficiency. The maintenance contract further ensured that the system remained in optimal condition, providing long-term value and peace of mind for the client.
Exceeding expectations
In conclusion, the successful collaboration between our team and Multipaneluk highlights the importance of innovative solutions in the modern industrial landscape. Through meticulous planning, execution, and ongoing support, we were able to deliver a system that not only met but exceeded the client's expectations, setting a benchmark for future projects.
